Podium Finishes for Switch Pro-Rider Marc Jacobs
Switch Pro-Rider Marc Jacobs is back and on the podium
This entry was posted on July 19, 2015 by skw_admin.
Coming off a serious knee injury that curtailed his world tour in 2014, Switch pro-rider Marc Jacobs (NZ) has battled his way back into form with podium finishes in 3 out of 3 stops of the Virgin Kitesurf World Championships., 2 in Big Air, and another podium in the Freestyle event.
Formally known as the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) World Tour the Virgin Kitesurf World Championship Tour (VKWC) backed by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and serial entrepreneur and founder of ZED Javier Perez Dolset, plan to host 9 world class kitesurfing events across the globe this year. Crowning the overall kitesurf world champions (Men & Women’s) in Cape Town, South Africa in December.
A strong recovery has allowed Marc to successfully compete in Dakhla, Venezuela and Tarifa Kitesurf World Championships so far this year.
Dakhla Kitesurf World Championships
Dakhla proved to be challenging for Marc in Freestyle but battling in 25 knots winds and a field of the world’s best riders, Marc's powerful riding style earned him a second spot on the podium in Big Air.
Marc Jacobs: "Just got 2nd in the big air event at the PKRA World Tour pretty happy with the result as I haven't rode like this in a few years. Was good fun flying around with the boys congrats Kevin Langeree on the win!"

Venezuela Kitesurf World Championships
Delivering aerial manoeuvres that delighted the crowds, Marc defeated Dakhla's winner Kevin Langeree (NL) to secure 1st place in the Big Air Men’s event in Venezuela.
Marc Jacobs: "Pumped on winning big air! #spintowin #jackiechanstyle"

Tarifa Kitesurf World Championship
For the latest event Marc traveled to Spain to participate in the 3rd stop of the tour. Strong Atlantic winds looked promising for powerhouse Marc and for the Freestyle they worked in his favour but not so in the Big Air.
Fighting off two-time world champion and tour buddy Youri Zoon (NL) by 1.5 points, Marc progressed to the next heat where he met tour leader Liam Whaley (ES) in the Freestyle semi-finals. Marc stayed focused and powerful in every trick he landed and defeated Liam to advance to the final where he met Brazilian, Carlos Mario. Powerhouse Marc couldn't match the trick list of Mario, which landed Marc his first Freestyle podium finish on tour - 2nd place.

Marc Jacobs: “I’m happy Tarifa delivered the goods I haven’t ridden on my smallest kite since last year in Fuerteventura so was a bit nervous. Luckily I have a new secret weapon the ‘Legacy’, that handles the gusts super well. I couldn’t be happier with the launch of my new c-kite with its amazing slack upwind performance, easy handling and allows me to still handle it being super over powered due to it amazing depower. This kite is already helping me so much with my freestyle on the VKWC tour”

Kitesurfing: Kung Fu trick seals big air gold - Marc Jacobs
Kitesurfing: Kung Fu trick seals big air gold

Mount Maunganui kitesurfer Marc Jacobs has bounced back from a season-ending injury in 2014 to claim a victory in the second event of the 2015 Virgin World Kitesurf Championships.
The 25-year-old stormed to the win in the big air discipline at the second round in Isla De Coche, Venezuela, bettering, by one place, his result from the first round in Morocco and pipping the winner of that round, Netherlands' Kevin Langeree.
Severe knee damage - tearing his meniscus when landing heavily on a large wave - saw Jacobs pull out of last year's tour, with four rounds remaining, while second overall.
"(The win) definitely feels good, especially after the injury," he said.
"An injury definitely sets you back and winning an event like that gets you back in the groove."
A combination of tricky conditions on the day and his physique made him question his ability to win.
"Conditions were tough," he said "I was on my biggest kite and I wasn't expecting to win because I'm one of the heaviest guys competing in big air.
"But, luckily, I spin fast and I ended up doing some really good tricks.
'I'm happy with what I did, a Kung Fu pass spin, spin, spin and five flips with a grab the whole way. For the conditions I think it's pretty good.
"I'm stoked and happy to finally win in big air because coming second in Morocco just made me want to win the next one."
While Jacobs' season-ending injury happened at last year's Fuerteventura, remarkably he managed to compete in the following round in Germany. "That type of injury can't be diagnosed without a scan, but I knew something was wrong."
Rest was his only treatment.
"I was trying to not think about it because I knew I had a comp coming up, but when competing in Germany I knew it was something serious because of how sharp the pain was."
The world kitesurfing tour this year is vastly changed from its 2014 incarnation, with rights to the series being bought by Virgin.
All rounds are scheduled to feature freestyle and big air competitions and there will also be wave competitions at some.
"It's really cool that the tour is now offering both because the spectators really enjoy seeing the height of the big air."
Jacobs started kitesurfing in 2006. With just a kite and no board, he would jump off sand dunes to get used to flying and handling the kite.
He started competing professionally in 2011, finishing third overall.
The next event on the tour is in Tarifa, in Spain, starting on July 11.
