Switch from Method2 to Element3

Hi all,

I've been the happy owner of the Method2 kite for almost two years now, in 9 and
6 sizes. I loved these kites so much, I was very reluctant to change for another
model. They were excellent in many ways. Very good low-end, excellent upwind
ability, good drift, etc. After two years of intensive use, it was time to get new kites.
I was waiting for the announcement of the Method3 to change my quiver. You can
imagine my disappointment when I heard the model was discontinued.
I was waiting for the announcement of the Method3 to change my quiver. You can
imagine my disappointment when I heard the model was discontinued.
My options were to either buy a new set of Method2 or get a set of Element3 kites.
I was budget-driven when I first bought Switch kites, and it is still the case today. I
could not find any other brand in the same price range that I would trust in terms
of quality and durability. I read a lot about the Element3 online to make sure that it
was the kite for me, but I wasn't really convinced. I was reluctant to change. Why
change something that works for me? How could an "all-terrain" kite be as good as
the Method2 at waveriding? I thought this was just some marketing bs to have one
less kite in the range, to save on R&D, because the Method was probably the kite
that did not sell as much as the other models, because of its niche market, and what
not. The fact that there was no Element3 in size 6 was also bothering me. I like
traveling light, with just a couple of kites. The Methods 9 and 6 were just perfect for
that. I spoke with Felix who eventually decided me on the Element3.
So here I was with the new and crispy Elements in the boot of my car... It took me
almost a month to get them out. I mainly kite on a spot where the kite choice is a
commitment. You have to walk more than half a kilometer upwind in 30 gusty knots
with sand in your face if you want to change kites, and once you've arrived there is
no one to help you land your kite. I thought the Element3 would not handle the gusts
as well as the Method2, I thought the high end of the Element 7 would not be as
good as the Method 6, I had tons of excuses to keep flying the kites I loved.
Yesterday, I finally took the Element out of the car. The wind was full offshore, 30
knots, gusty, 1 to 1.5m waves.
After a few minutes on the water, I found the kite very easy to getting used to. The
depower was excellent, it held the gusts like a charm (that was one of my major
concerns), and after a couple of hours it was just like I had been flying that kite
forever. It was predictable. And it made the flaws of the Method2 blatant. Most
kitesurfers who tried my Methods told me the kite was too different from what they
were used to, which was often what put them off. This is not the case with the
Element. The kite is predictable. I love my Methods because after two years of use I
know them very well. I feel that I won't need long to take full advantage of what the
Element3 has to offer. I also found that it is a better kite for strapless freestyling
than the Method. This is where the "all-terrain" part comes in handy.
One session does not allow you to fully assess all features of the kite, but it is
definitely enough to make me pick the Element first next time I'm going kitesurfing!
Switch has a new Element3 convert.
Thanks for reading my lenghty message, here's a pic from yesterday for your patience:
TL;DR: if you're riding with the Method2, do switch for the Element3. You won't be
disappointed.

AGAINST THE ODDS
On the 5th tour stop this year in Fuerteventura I injured my right knee in the semifinal against Reno Romeu. While performing a FBM, I completely stopped on a wave taking all the impact on my right leg as my leg was fully extended. Feeling a very sharp pain in my knee, I continued on with the heat, performing a few more tricks and experiencing a lot of pain on the landings…
After PKRA Fuerte I ended up taking 7 days rest and gave it a try again to see how it felt but it was still sore on impacts. The last day before heading to Germany I was trying my leg out again hoping that I would be recovered enough for the comp. During this session I ended up blowing my ear drum as well! Just my luck. I felt like I couldn’t do anything right on this trip, everything was breaking! But I refused to give up and still headed on my way to Germany.
I really wanted to win PKRA Germany as previously it was my first ever PKRA event that I’d won, but my body was in the wars.
I really wanted to win PKRA Germany as previously it was my first ever PKRA event that I’d won, but my body was in the wars.
Looking back on the event I remember my first heat being pretty bad – super unbalanced, crashing my fist 5 tricks in a row, but I managed to pull it together towards the end to make the win. I ended up riding pretty well after that, making it all the way to the final against Hadlow. I was super stoked I made it that far with my ear fully taped up as it was ruptured, and my knee hurting on almost every landing.
However in the finals I couldn’t pull it together like the heats before, but I was still happy with my 2nd in the singles. The next day my knee was blown up like a balloon, I lost a lot of flexibility in it and could barely walk normally. I knew it was a way of my body telling me not to ride but I don’t like to give up and still had hope. I ended up facing Liam who was killing it, and my knee was in far too much pain to concentrate on a solid heat with powered tricks. I gave the heat my all but the pain was too much and I couldn’t go for my text book, powered style.
Overall I was still super stoked to make the podium with such injuries. I remember flying home and my knee was so swollen I knew it was time to get it checked out. After seeing a specialist they found I had badly torn my lateral meniscus, which meant 4 months out of the water, 2 months non-weight bearing and 2 months getting it strong again.
Currently I have two weeks left until I’m allowed to walk again, then it’s rehab time getting it back nice and strong. I’ve been going pretty crazy but I still go to the gym 6 times a week, hobbling around with my alien leg haha! Working on my upper body and still my left leg as it helps speed up recovery. I started cycling 10 days ago, non weight bearing for 30mins every day, as moving the knee with no weight on it can help it heal faster by encouraging blood flow.
I cant wait to ride again and get my level even higher – one thing about injuries is that my motivation has gone off the carts and I feel like I’m 15 yrs old again when I first tried kiteboarding and motivation is one of the key ingredients to pushing the limits!!
Marc Jacobs rides for Switch, and is now an expert at crosswords.

Disclaimer - I am in no way affiliated to switch kites Just love their products.
Rider profile - 80kg twin tip rider, been kiting for two years. Would say I am an intermediate rider. Current quiver: element v1 7m and Element v2 9m
Previously ridden kites: ozone instinct 12 2009, bandit dos 8m, carbrinha switch blade 2010 11m , north dice 2014 9m
NITRO v4 REVIEW
I've been riding my 9m element solid for the last year and my review will be mainly based on the comparison between the two.
Construction - bomb proof as always
Lift/ hang time - amazing lift and hang time can jump almost twice as high as I could on my element and the float is awsome and predictable, great for massive back and front rolls.
Pop/slack - I'm only doing unhooked raleys and back rolls but the pop and line slack is great and has improved my unhooked tricks considerable.
I felt the kite handle exceptionally well and even tho the website says the element is the better kite to learn on I would say otherwise and recommend the kite to any newbie kiter.
I was a tight ass and didn't splash out on the carry bag so the only recommendation I can make to switch is if they could make the duffle bag twice the size because it's a mission to store the kite after a hard session.
If I could afford to I would sell my elements and buy a nitro quiver..

Nitro V4 review. 10m
Previous kites owned Cab Switchblade 2013 10m . Weight 180 pounds -board 138 Xcaliber Cabrinha -Wind 15-23 knots
First impressions out of the bag. Construction and build is A grade. Matches up to the other top brands with out any doubt. Love the attention to detail.
First few flights I noticed how smooth and responsive the kite is. The kite has some great low end. Really noticeable when comparing it to the Switchblade.
Love how this kite jumps. It not only pops you up in height but gives you great loft. For the wind conditions the height I was able to achieve was fantastic.
Bar pressure was super comfortable light-medium always knowing the location of your kite .
Well done Switch.
Highly recommend this kite for any free-rider who love's to fly.
4-5 stars.
